Suikoden STAR LEAP team building: formation, weaknesses and runes

Plan all six positions, exploit the correct weaknesses and equip role-appropriate runes before spending on upgrades.

Plan six positions around one encounter

Start with the enemy formation, then choose a leader and fill all six seats. Preserve the front or back placement shown by a working example instead of treating the party as an unordered list. Check whether a support effect applies to a row or a particular attack type. Add protection and recovery that let your attacker keep taking turns; replace an unavailable teammate by its job rather than its rarity alone.

Use both matchup systems and watch the timeline

Weapon and elemental matchups are separate checks. In the referenced rules, weakness adds 50% damage and resistance reduces damage by 25%. Attacking a weakness also helps unbalance an enemy and move its turn back. Breaking both weaknesses causes knockdown and lowers its defenses, but does not guarantee a long extra delay. Save useful skills for that window and inspect the turn order after each action instead of assuming every ally can attack first.

Match runes and accessories to the skill

Read whether the actual skill uses physical or magical attack. Bangles support physical attackers; rings support magical attackers, with another condition tied to the matching element or attack. Aegir’s example recommends Power Rune and Sword Bangle, with Knockdown Rune and Lightning Bangle as alternatives. These are separate equipment choices, not four simultaneous slots. Check your character’s allowed armor family before crafting, and compare the effect trigger with the fight you are preparing for.

Advance the systems that unlock your next upgrade

Ascension opens later Talent Tree tiers, while limit breaks unlock other improvements. Inspect the required node instead of spending materials without a target. Cooking raises bond progress without using minigame stamina; accumulated bond points can carry beyond a full bar until you obtain the rank-up materials. Work on the characters you actually deploy, then compare the new setup against the same encounter. This guide follows Japanese-service references and does not promise identical global availability.
